Description
One day, social worker Okutsu receives a case about an unidentified middle aged man and an Akita dog found dead in an empty car abandoned in the wilderness. Forensics show that the man died a year and a half ago, while the dog outlived him by many months, never leaving his side. While researching the unidentified corpse, Okutsu feels sorry for the canine that stayed faithfully nearby, not understanding that his master had passed, which triggers a flood of memories of his own beloved companion that helped him through the difficulties of his upbringing. What is this significance of this gap in time? The answer is in the sadness and joy of the little bit of life that was left between one man and one dog.

The book sold over 400,000 copies in Japan and attracted a film adaptation, Star Watching Dog, released on June 11, 2011. Filming began August, 2010, in a park in Nayoro, Hokkaido. Other filming locations include Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, and Tokyo.

Murakami also wrote a sequel to the story, "Sunflowers", about a social worker who is driven to uncovering the story of Daddy and Happie. NBM ComicsLit published English translations of both stories in one volume titled Stargazing Dog in November 2011.

Notes: Akita dogs are evidently highly respected for their loyalty in Japan. The famously loyal Akita dog Hachiko is permanently honored by a statue in Shibuya, Tokyo.
