This successor of the long selling Heisei classic “Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms” is a family drama set in the town of Kure, Hiroshima during the Second World War. The heroine is URANO Suzu, who was born in the fishing town in Hiroshima. She marries HOJO Shusaku, a naval officer living in the uptown area of Kure city. Though confused by her new family, new town and new world, she lives with a sense of certainty and intense effort.

Kono Sekai no Katasumini was a Jury Recommended Work in the 2008 Japan Media Arts Festival, and the following year, it won the Excellence Prize in the Manga Division. A "folktale-like" tone has been noted in the work, and Kouno's humour has been praised.

The manga was adapted into a live-action television special which aired 5 August 2011 on NTV, starring Keiko Kitagawa as Suzu Urano, Keisuke Koide as Shūsaku Hōjō, Yūka as Rin Shiroki, Mokomichi Hayami as Tetsu Mizuhara, Ryo as Keiko, Saburō Shinoda as Entarō Hōjō, Yoshie Ichige as San Hōjō, and Mana Ashida as Chizuko Hōjō. The anime movie project Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni (In This Corner of The World) opened its official site on March 8, 2015.
