Murakami and Nakabayashi are just policemen trying to do their jobs. When there is a bomb explosion inside Shuei Primary School, they are asked to do their jobs as policemen and check out the lead. It turns out a doctor from a mental institution called in to warn about the explosion immediately before the bomb went off. And so begins their association with the nameless mental patient whom they would eventually call "Maki."
For some reason, Maki can "speak" with spirits. There are spirits all around us, and Maki can communicate with them. These spirits tell Maki about deep dark things... things that go on when no one else is looking...

Arcana features a humorous plot starring two detectives, Murakami and Nakabayashi, and an unidentified mysterious girl who possesses the power to see spirits. As the story unfolds, Murakami and Nakabayashi have been assigned to a serial bombing case that specifically targeted elementary school kids. Neither of them have any idea of what to go about. Their only source: the prophecy of a patient suffering from amnesia and currently undergoing rehabilitation at a local mental clinic. The detectives try to uncover the secret behind the mystery girl as job reassignments and supernatural occurrences occur more and more frequently.
On a dark story (but not devoid of humor), the mangaka has chosen to tackle characters that are distinguished by the sharpness and clarity of their design, and ghosts of a more responsible design, over worked.
According to the manga , Arcana is the synthesis of two manga. From a pilot published in Ottori Sousa Volume 7, which was left out due to time constraints, the author would have taken to add, to humanize the story, elements of a love story he had prepared to lead and the final story.
Arcana is in the line of Anne Freaks, which preceded it, though less violent and offbeat.
Universe
The peculiarity of the universe Arcana, is of course the living spirit. As explained in some translations, others mythology identify the gnomes , the sylphs , the nymphs .
Those of Arcana have the following feature:
They come from a living person who creates when it is afraid to die, as if to save, or, it seems, in internal conflicts.
They grow old and eventually die unless absorb the souls of living people.
They are inclined to kill the person who created them, in revenge for their existence without purpose, without attachment.
They communicate with the dead, allow men to do the same, they can teleport and make telekinesis.
Spirits, dead or alive can be good or bad.
